2012 is well and truly with us, and there are several, very high-profile anniversaries being marked this year. February sees the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens, and we have a wide selection of the great man's works, together with some wonderful new publications. These include Claire Tomalin's wonderful biography and a lovely new book entitled Dickens' Victorian London, featuring a host of photographs of areas of the metropolis which feature in his novels.
In March it will be a century since Captain Scott's Antarctic expedition ended in glorious failure just short of the South Pole, and among the books covering these events is a collection of Scott's own photographs, documenting the expedition through his eyes.
As if this wasn't enough, we find that April marks the hundredth anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Richard Davenport-Hines has produced a remarkable account of personal stories in Titanic Lives, and local author Leah Fleming has written The Captain's Daughter, a fictional tale based on this tragic event.
